Venice is the famous city of love, with a stunning backdrop of waterways, bridges, palaces and churches at every corner. In fact, the entire history of Venice is intimately linked to Cupid. Throughout history, a couple embarking on a romantic escape to Venice has been hugely popular and Harry’s Dolce Vita imagine the Royal newlyweds in this iconic Italian city of love following their wedding.
As with any happy couple visiting Venice, it is expected that they will enjoy a famous tradition dating centuries and step onto the gondola. The gondola is one of the strongest symbols of Venice and the gondoliers who master these vessels are known as the genuine guides of Venice, sharing the history and singing romantic songs as they transport the couple through the the inextricable network and infinite capillarity of her watery streets.
The Venetian gondola network is the central feature of the display, created by florists Early Hours. This is an interactive element which will allow guests to sit in the romantic Gondola, which will rest on a sea of blue flowers against a stunning ‘rainbow heart’ flower backdrop. This will be the perfect Instagram moment for people to capture a ‘Chelsea in Bloom’ gondola ride and celebrate this potential honeymoon venue for Meghan and Harry. The theme will continue along the front of the building, integrating the striped poles that mark the gondola stopping points, through the current planter sections between the windows.
For their inaugural Chelsea in Bloom display, Lucas Hugh worked in collaboration with florist partner Rebel Rebel to create a kaleidoscopic concept that draws inspiration from The 14 Hour Technicolour Dream, an iconic concert held at Alexandra Palace over one heady night in 1967.
Pink Floyd who headlined the concert, played into the early hours with material from their then-unreleased debut album, Piper at The Gates of Dawn. It was this album’s artwork – a vibrant, kaleidoscope image of the band members shot by photographer Vic Singh using a prism lens – that really spurred their imagination.
Rebel Rebel chose Strelitzias for their striking colour, dynamic lines and architectural nature but also for their symbolism. Otherwise known as the Bird of Paradise flower, Strelitzias are said to represent joyfulness and of course, paradise – a physical representation of the euphoric beginnings of The Summer of Love.
As newcomers to the Kings Road, Lucas Hugh sought to pay homage to the theme while looking to showcase the DNA of Lucas Hugh. As a brand, they seek to change the lens through which the world sees activewear, pushing the boundaries of design and style. Powerful, angular lines and high contrast colour are indicative of Lucas Hugh making this kaleidoscopic concept engineered with the structural Strelitzia the perfect fit.
“LOVE IS LOVE”
The Theme “Love Is Love” was originally inspired by Kiehl’s resident skeleton “Mr. Bones”.
Kiehl’s Since 1851 has long and rich scientific traditions as well as a profound respect for the medical community. The accompanying skeleton, “Mr Bones” appears in every Kiehl’s store around the world.
They have decided to relate their display to this connection to their brand: Two skeletons in love, strolling through a summer meadow.
The display aims to portray love in it’s purest form, to demonstrate that love is not only skin deep, that love can come in any form and that love is everlasting.
What does love mean to you?

I was born and brought up in Chelsea. I was on the King’s Road in the late 60s, early 70s, and to me that’s what the summer of love is all about.”
The display was conceptualized by Kiki and brought to life by Philip Corps and Maggie Coker, the mastermind behind our last year’s Highly Commended Floral Safari, that featured a bright pink giraffe and orange monkey towering over our shop window.

As their brand is rooted in California, Oliver Peoples drew inspiration for the Summer of Love from the iconic Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. Affectionately referred to as, “The Haight,” this neighborhood served as the hub of the Summer of Love in 1967, where thousands of young, enlightened minds flooded the city with messages of love carried by music and art. Similarly, London experienced its own Summer of Love at the same time which further solidifies the 1960s as a global era of change and freedom of speech. Their floral arrangement connects the two cities as we celebrate the beginning of summer in London. For flowers, they chose Larkspur which symbolizes love, Delphinium which symbolizes and celebrates positivity and Antirrhinum which symbolizes grace and strength; as wishes to the new royal couple—the current Summer of Love.

The Fold is delighted to participate in their first Chelsea in Bloom. The flagship Grade II listed building on the corner of Cadogan Place and Pont Street will be adorned with an elaborate floral installation designed by William Farr, in collaboration with The Fold.
A romantic vision of the newly-weds parading the blossom-confetti filled streets of Windsor was the initial inspiration that sparked the design concept. Upon further research, William Farr and the design team discovered an illustrious use of blossom at Royal weddings, beginning with Queen Victoria in 1840, who replaced her traditional tiara for a wealth of orange blossom at her wedding to Prince Albert. This inspired a generation of Royal brides, including HRH Queen Elizabeth II, who paid homage to her Great Grandmother with a border of applique blossom along the hem of her wedding dress. The Fold channels the notion of celebratory confetti through the use of blossom, ushering in the next generation of nuptials for Chelsea in Bloom 2018.
William Farr fell in love with the idea of blossom as a universal symbol for new beginnings and a gesture towards the historical royal references for the ‘Summer of Love’ theme. The design will see him construct abstract borders across the store’s window. He will weave stems of ivy and twist branches of meticulously hand-sewn silk blossom petals, much in the fashion of blossom that adorned Harry’s Grandmother’s wedding dress. The Fold will be handing out pockets of scented rose petals and ivory confetti to passers-by during the Royal Wedding for all to share.
Of course, no wedding would be complete without the custom of throwing the bouquet. As a fitting finale, guests to the store will enter beneath an elaborate bouquet, constructed from iconic wedding blooms. It will suspend mid-air and cascade above the main entrance in delightful anticipation.

Catherine’s installation will be adorned with fragrant early summer flowers and leaves, designed to bring beautiful summer garden weddings and events to mind.
At Williams & Rice they regularly work with clients for wedding and event hair – and love the idea of creating dreamy, slightly ethereal looks with flowers woven into intricate plaits and curls, rather like the structure of the archway with eucalyptus and silver birch, laced with pretty flowers such as roses and jasmine chosen to bring a softness and romance to the overall look.
The Wulf & Lamb x Seedlip display is inspired by the Princess & the Pea fairy tale.
The display takes the form of a four poster bed stacked high with florally dressed mattress supported by a humble pea.
To celebrate the collaboration a special Version of the princess & the pea has been penned by Ben Branson Seedlip’s founder & Pea pioneer:
Once upon a thyme there was a Vixen Princess who lived in the land of Sugar Snap and loved peas.
She wanted to marry a Fox Prince who also adored Peas & her chief Peakeeper Minty the Lamb was testing suitors.
Who could guess how many Peas the Princess ate every day?
94? 42? 36? The guesses came from kingdoms far & wide but the perfect Prince was like finding a needle in a hay-stack.
She was unhappea. Her trusted friend Rosemary the Wulf tried to console the Princess but she would just sob and sob. One evening, Hop the Hare heard a knocking at the door & opened to see who could be knocking.
“Peas be with you Sir. I am the Fox Prince from the land of Petit Pois and I herb on the grape vine if I guess correctly I can marry the Princess? Well it takes on average 108 days to sow grow & pick the perfect pea so 108 is my guess.”
The Princess was speachless. She had found her Prince and had peas of mind. “Lettuce rejoice & there be Peas & Love for all the peaple” she peaclaimed .
So the Princess, Fox Prince, Minty the Lamb, Rosemary the Wolf and Hop the Hare celebrated with Seedlip & Tonics garnished with Peas & plates of smashed peas on toast. They all lived happealy ever after.
