Stanley Kubrick, Ken Adams & Andre Bloc were key citations in the development of the stores filmic beginnings and were provided as a starting point for the collaboration with Genevieve. One key scene within a 1970’s James Bond film, designed by Stanley Kubrik inspired the sink within the Aesop Duke of York Square.
Taking direct reference from the resource material behind the store design, artist Genevieve Lutkin has produced a series of images in response to these key influences and the interior of the store itself. These will be presented as a series of long printed textiles within the space and as a primary textile lightbox.
Crimson red carnations, the flower of Bond, will flow through the space and the imagery as a quiet nod to this reference. Large scale floral installations will be brought to life by their long-standing floral partner Fjura providing a moment of chaos and texture.

Amaffi Perfume House has created a unique interpretation of The Jungle Book. Taking inspiration from Amaffi Perfume House’s signature scents from The Jungle Collection; Tropical Rain and Sultry Jungle, they have been inspired to create a veritable jungle setting which will adorn the facade of the store, utilizing a mixture of luscious green foliage and dried tropical textures, including large sculptural leaves and striking rare plant specimens which add beautiful pops of reds, purple and oranges throughout. Woven into the very fabric of the jungle setting, a black panther sculpture, formed by skilled artisans and using assorted black plant materials, adds a curious and detail driven moment. Taking centre stage, the most exquisite and detailed Kaa sculpture will adorn the jungle framework they have created. Draped lovingly around exotic branches in a fluid and authentic manner, this floral piece will resonate and bring to life an iconic moment from the film, allowing guests to immerse themselves within the scenography and take their perfect Jungle Book inspired photograph. After winning the People’s Champion Award in 2022 with their first ever Chelsea in Bloom participation, Astrid & Miyu is back for their second year running. The brand is partnering with Ivy and Gold Studio, a creative events and styling studio, to bring the ‘Flowers on Film’ theme to life.
Celebrating yourself is a huge part of the Astrid & Miyu brand message, and as a nod to their #MusesofAM community, Chelsea in Bloom 2023 is all about celebrating YOU. Their display is centred around their very own feature film, ‘You’re the Muse’ – it allows you, the community, to be the main character in their film!
Aside from being a beautiful photo opportunity, Astrid & Miyu wants everyone to be a part of their floral display. With vintage cinema seats, they’re encouraging the King’s Road community to take a seat and take gorgeous pictures of themselves surrounded by the ombre flower arrangements. Made up of a varied mix of dried and fresh flowers (signature to Astrid & Miyu) the display was constructed using wire to represent a vintage film reel and includes a ‘You’re the Muse’ acrylic clapperboard as a synonymous symbol of movie sets. Beaverbrook Town House

Beaverbrook Town House

Their oriental display this year pulls inspiration from both the Japanese art and cuisine that can be found throughout Beaverbrook Town House, as well as the film adaptation of the 1885 opera by Gilbert & Sullivan, The Mikado, that first opened in the Savoy theatre – the namesake of one of our spacious Studio Suites. Their rooms and suites are named and styled after famous London playhouses, reflecting Lord Beaverbrook’s love of theatre when visiting London, and The Mikado was one of the most successful international shows at Savoy theatre, providing the inspiration for their striking Japanese inspired display that features Japan’s signature flora and fauna. The Mikado was later captured in film, bringing the Japanese opera to the big screen.
Japanese design and cuisine are laced through the hotel, from The Fuji Grill restaurant that offers an elegant menu of flawless sushi, sashimi and nigiri, and The Sushi Bar where guests can embark on a 12 or 20 course Omakase menu that highlights the best of Japan’s cuisine, to the traditional Japanese artworks – including woodblock butterfly prints, a Mount Fuji collection and Japanese matchbox patchworks – that line the walls. A spectacular bonsai tree will frame the right side of our Georgian townhouse, along with smaller, decorative plants and flowers weaving their way around the base of the bonsai, creating a bold and enticing presentation reflective of the unique Japanese journey and celebration of theatre that guests can continue within the hotel.

Birley Bakery

The inspiration from the display at the Birley Bakery is drawn from two main scenes in the film – Eliza Dolittle in the old Covent Garden Market, and Eliza Dolittle at the Royal Ascot Races scenes.
The details of the original Covent Garden Market are recreated with the distinctive blue painted iron work architectural details in the main flower hall. Wooden flower crates, towers of flower filled buckets, and an old flower cart recreate the blocks of colourful flowers seen in the film. Buckets are dressed with ribbons and hessian, mixing the prettiness of the Royal Ascot scenes with the raw Flower Market Scenes.
Upside down Edwardian umbrellas filled with flowers hanging in the windows and the whole shop front is festooned with swags of ribbons, inspired by the Royal Ascot scene, held up by roundels inspired by old Covent Garden Market. Finally, a sumptuous display of plants and flowers placed around and on the flower cart are observed by two Flower Market doggies going about their business, representing the “scally wag” informal nature of the flower market.

Brora

Brora

As Brora celebrate their 30th anniversary, they felt it appropriate to look at films released the year Brora began. One movie resonated strongly…. So with ‘flowers in film’ in mind, their display ushers you into the world of The Secret Garden, the 1993 British film set in Yorkshire, starring Kate Maberly, Heydon Prowse and Maggie Smith.
As their thistle emblem suggests, Brora has strong roots in nature with flowers a recurring theme. Not only are several colourways inspired by poetic botanical names, this year – peony, turquoise meadow, moss trellis and anthracite garden, but hand-drawn flower designs, Liberty fabric and floral-inspired block prints run wild through their SS23 collections. Their clothing made from natural fabrics such as linens, silk, organic cotton, cashmere and wool feature in the window so work in perfect harmony with the design.
To represent an abandoned, once loved garden springing and blooming back to life – a poignant and hopeful symbol of our natural world – they have used a variety of dried and fresh foliage and flowers.
Ferns, grasses and dried flax (linen) intertwine with roses, lavender, delphiniums, foxgloves, daisies, peonies and hydrangea. Aiming for organic materials only, they have featured glass and metal containers to hold stems, aluminium chicken wire to keep anything structural together, as well as natural willow, twisted hazel, jute and rope, which also acts as reference to the forgotten swing the children find in the garden.

Chelsea Physic Garden

Chelsea Physic Garden

London’s oldest botanic garden is celebrating its 350-year anniversary and entering Chelsea in Bloom for the first time. Although often seen as hidden behind brick walls, Chelsea Physic Garden is well-known as a beautiful green space in the middle of historic Chelsea. Established 350 years ago in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London to study medicinal plants, it has long been a healing garden – much like the Secret Garden of the novel. Throughout this celebratory year, the Garden will be ‘Unlocking their collections’ to new stories, research and scientific discoveries – discovering a key to a Secret Garden.
The design draws elements from planting within London’s ‘Not So’ Secret Garden, which has a collection of over 4,500 plants from all around the world. Plants including ferns, tropical plants, fruits, herbs and succulents, all inspired by plants in the Garden. On the corner of Swan Walk and Royal Hospital Road, visitors will be wowed by a giant watering can, overflowing with plants and flowers inspired by the garden within. At the entrance to the Garden there will be an eye-catching, colourful wall of plants and flowers, with mini gardening tools arranged to form the number 350 – representing the 350 years since the Garden’s founding.
The florists, designers and plant suppliers have all taken inspiration for the design and display from one of the Garden’s 350-year anniversary projects – ‘350 Defining Plants’. This is a list of plants which grow, or have grown, at Chelsea Physic Garden, that staff and volunteers have decided are important and defining plants from its 350 years of history. These plants have been chosen because of their ability to ‘Unlock the Garden’s collections, champion the role of ‘Horticulture for humankind’ and help explore what it means to be ‘A physic garden for the future’ – the three key themes of Chelsea Physic Garden’s 350 anniversary year.
The plants in the displays have been supplied by Neal’s Nurseries. It is estimated that 70% of these plants will be living and used after the display. There has been a big effort to be as sustainable as possible, however the Garden is aware that there are some aspects that cannot be avoided, such as importing plants from abroad, using cut flower or the use of plastic plant pots. In an attempt to lessen their impact on the environment, Chelsea Physic Garden is offsetting its carbon with London based company ‘Furthr’. This company will calculate the display’s unavoidable carbon footprint and offset through projects or planting trees.

Meat the Fish

Meat the Fish

Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton, is a heart-warming tale about love, family and storytelling. Three things they believe food represents – breaking bread with loved ones, sharing stories and bringing people together. It is also a movie filled with symbolism, metaphor, and beautiful imagery.
The fantastical fish and the wondrous field of yellow daffodils are the two visual elements that spoke to them immediately. Both symbols of much bigger things. The fish representing growth and leaving your comfort zone (the fishbowl) to explore bigger opportunities – much like they have expanded from Beirut to London – whilst the flowers symbolise one’s willingness to go above and beyond in pursuit of one’s desires and dreams.
Big Fish is truly a film with heart, and as the ‘Nothing but Love Group’ of food brands, they operate from the heart as well.

Their concept is based on Alice in Wonderland and the Roses Painted Red scene. They have ensured that the display is as sustainable as possible – the frames for the rose bushes are made of repurposed wood from around school and the playing cards are made of recycled paper and dried petals and lavender. The paint brushes are made of palm leaves which have been taken from plants belonging to members of our community. Plants from around the school have also been used to boost the greenery of the display and will then be returned when the event is over.
The display was designed by a Year 12 A Level Textiles student who loves working with flowers and plants for her own designs. A nerdy florist finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed in Little Shop of Horrors.
This year they are willing to build our decor with minimum impact on the environment. They will be using a giant plant pot to create the base of their monster and will be using chicken wire to get the shape. They will be using lots of foliage along with bold colours and on the other side of the display, it will seem like an old-fashioned florist with lots of bunches and plants to sell. Indoors, shop a selection of plants for sale as they bring the little shop of horrors inside!

In the distant future, a small-waste collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind. The robot is WALL-E, the star of the Academy Award winning animated film, and he is the inspiration for their store and window display.
Poetry is committed to making clothes with minimal impact on the planet. They use only natural fabrics, supporting the use of renewable resources and the growth of millions of plants – activities they imagine would meet with WALL-E’s approval.
Their display has been created using only eco-friendly and recycled materials. The arch framing the window has been crafted from coco bark, pre-used hessian, found branches and a weathered clematis vine, and attached to the arch are items from WALL-E’s rubbish-strewn home: oil drums, cans, pots, sacks, boots and shoes, all sourced from local charity shops, with the base of the display constructed from old wooden pallets given a new life.
Centre stage is WALL-E himself, brought to life using entirely recycled materials. To symbolise growth and renewal, he is surrounded by an optimistic array of carefully selected plants including vibrant sunflowers, poppies, mixed grasses, gazania, Mintaka, de-headed Hydrangea plants and aged bay trees. In the film, the sight and feeling of soil and the plant brought back to the spaceship by EVE is the catalyst for positive change, eventually returning humans back to Earth.
WALL-E is a robot that expresses so much emotion without words. They hope their homage to his commitment to the planet inspires others to do the same – by reducing waste, supporting the circular economy, and finding joy in a sustainable future.

The display reflects the journey of the film in flowers, where different stages and scenes can be found throughout the restaurant. On the restaurant frontage, they are capturing the vineyard at the beginning of the film when it’s slightly jaded, old and a little tired – here you will find dried or air plants and flowers such as yellow rape and dried gyp, as well as piled high medley of vintage goods, from the family farm & vineyard Nutbourne in West Sussex – all recycled, reused or up-cycled in some way, with wisteria coming up and over the doorway, representing a vine from the vineyard. A table and two chairs sit under the display, reminiscent of the first flashback in the movie of dinner between the Uncle and the protagonist, played by Russell Crowe.
Entering the restaurant and you will the flowers from the movie, recreated in the window among a mis en place presentation of vegetables grown on the Gladwin’s farm or neighbouring farms in Sussex, and seasonal produce from the movie, to recreate the first meeting at Fanny’s restaurant in town.
Towards the back of the restaurant, you enter the dinner scene set in the Vineyard Manager’s house, a little more outrageous and colourful – all created with flowers, and plants. It’s all about abundance and colour here. On the tables, find nosegays of flowers in keeping with the film, using the herbs from the menu and a roses that are used in the restaurant’s cocktail, using its petals.

This season, Russell & Bromley invites you to step into the world of The Secret Garden, a magical place inspired by an iconic story. Starting life as a 1911 novel, it was first turned into a film in 1993 and has since been recreated several times, showing how relevant the story is today as it was when it was first written. Drawing direct inspiration from the 90s cinematic version, their Chelsea store has been transformed into a venue of wild abundance, with the same striking flowers that defined the hidden paradise garden shown within the film: from fresh lilies, fragrant roses and irises to dreamy delphiniums, trailing ivy and exotic eucalyptus.
Following this theme, the store beckons visitors inside with its potted entrance trees, while window displays depict a verdant garden scene bursting with bright white, lilac and blue botanicals. Inside the store wonderland, the journey continues with rows of plants and rustic terracotta pots laced with campanula, rose bushes, jasmines, ornamental sage and berry-trimmed ivies.
